The Marine Protected Area ’Capo Carbonara“ was established by the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, with a Ministerial Decree of 15 September 1998, later amended in 1999 and fully replaced by the Ministerial Decree of 7 February 2012 (Official Gazette No. 113 of 16 May 2012). The management of the Marine Protected Area is entrusted only to the Villasimius Municipality.

The perimeter of the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area falls almost entirely within the Site of Community Interest (SCI) established pursuant to the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC 

In the ’Capo Carbonara“ Marine Protected Area we find several Special Protection Areas (SPAs) established under the Birds Directive 79/409/EEC

The ’Capo Carbonara“ Marine Protected Area has become an ASPIM area (Special Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance) pursuant to the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against the Hazards of Pollution better known as Barcelona Convention.
