Religious festivals
Villasimius celebrates the religious festivals of the Madonna del Naufrago, Santa Maria and the patron saint San Raffaele Arcangelo. They are accompanied by folkloristic performances with dances in traditional Sardinian costumes, music and poetic compositions. They represent an opportunity, beyond religious sentiment, to discover fascinating details about the local culture. The festival of Santa Maria takes place in the first week of September. For this festival, folk groups from other parts of Sardinia, masks, launeddas players and cantadores gather. Adorned ox-drawn carts (the so-called traccas) can be admired in procession, and alongside the riders parade women and children in traditional costume, a sign of the deep connection between religion and the trades of the past. Finally, the feast of San Raffaele, the patron saint of Villasimius, which falls on 24 October, is the occasion to close the island's long summer with singing, dancing and fireworks.
